Terms and conditions

Thank you for your interest in the “Rainfall Observers” project. This page explains the terms and conditions associated with this project and how any personal information collected in the process of signing up and submitting data to this project will be stored and used.

Data and privacy policy

Creating an account

In order to submit records to the Rainfall Observers project you will need to create an account. This is a quick and easy process which will enable you to log into the project website in order to edit and keep track of all of your records. At sign-up you have the option of using an Open Authentication method (i.e. using an existing Twitter, Google, Facebook account) or creating a new account. If you choose to create a new account this is done directly on the software developer’s backend system, Coreo.

Whichever method you choose, we will receive your name and email address. All records you submit will be linked with this email address (assuming you continue to use the same login method). We will only utilise your email address to:

  • validate your account
  • contact you if there is a query or comment regarding the verification of a record
  • send you occasional relevant information about this and related projects.

Your details will not be passed on to any 3rd parties outside the project.

Records submitted by you

Submitted records will be stored on a secure server where the partner organisations can access them for verification and quality assurance. Once verified, records without personal information may be accessed publicly via the project’s website. Additionally, where applicable, data will also be passed on to relevant organisations for analysis and/or addition to their own systems.

How long will my data be stored?

Your submitted records will be stored indefinitely to inform long-term meteorological research.

Who will have access to my personal data?

No one outside of the partnership organisations will have access to your personal data such as email address. Unless required by law, personal data will not be made available to any 3rd parties unless:

  • they are directly related to the project; and
  • we have obtained your permission to do so.

Third parties may include researchers and professional scientists from outside the partnership.

Deleting your account or data

If you wish to delete your account or data at any time please contact us at hello@natural-apptitude.co.uk giving us your name and associated email address. Note that any records you have submitted up to that point will not be deleted but will be marked as anonymous.

Health, Safety and Good Practice

By participating in the Rainfall Observers project, you acknowledge that you are responsible for your own health and safety when gathering and submitting data, and that the project partners cannot be held liable for any injury or loss that arises from you taking part in the project.

Please follow all the relevant guidance when installing and operating your rain gauge.

Please ensure that the chosen site for your rain gauge can be accessed both safely and easily, and that the site is safe to work in.
